the common rule is if you do your eyes, dont do your lips...so if you have smokey eyes, wear a nude color or something that doesnt pop..... if you make your eyes and lips ';pop'; you will look like you are trying to hard... one is sexy, both is scankey...

Nude lips are normally best coz u play up the eyes more and the focus is on them so everything else shud be simple, but there is no harm in wearing red to give an all over dramatic look.
A soft nude - more flesh toned/brown w/ earth toned eye shadows or a more pinkish brown or soft plum w/ jewel tones.

I agree with most of the answers above: something light (nude, light pink/peach). If for some reason you do want to go a little darker, I'd do a sheer stain intead of gloss.





I just wanted to add that exact smokey eye tone and the lip color tone will depend on your skin, hair and eye colors -- so you'll choose either warm or cool tones depending on what you are.
Try a nude, less ';poppy'; lip in order to bring all the focus on your eyes.


Or, if you want to excentuate both, then use an elegant, deep red.
