I find that lowering the contrast of the display to be the most helpful when dealing with glossy monitors. If that fails to help you can try to reduce the amount of room light or light that might reflect off of the surface of the screen. There are no Windows settings that can help with this. You might also consider replacing you monitor with a new monitor with a matte screen. These types are less glary but overall less brilliant. How to reduce eye strain on high gloss lcd screen?
wearing a polarized sunglasses may not be a bad idea. As a matter of fact, you can use the sunglasses outside too.
Windows Vista has the theme and the graphics to relax the eyes unlike XP's blue illlumination which kinda hurts the eyes a bit when exposed for too long.
With Vista's theme, the 3D effects will act as a game to relax the eys. No wonder they call it ';eye candy.'; Plus you have a variey of settings to dim or brighten the screen but it depends on you. As long Vista has the themes to relax the eyes.
Change the setting from aro to clasic.
